Cooking with Crock-Pots
Cooking with Crock-Pots Experience
I'm a little late on this post, but things have been crazy with getting my DICAS application ready and I just went on my honeymoon to Aruba. (Amazing!) Last semester was my senior capstone project. My partner and I wanted to educate those who may be food insecure. An opportunity came our way to work with Saint Mark's Lutheran Church in Bowling Green, Ohio to work with crock-pots! Donna, who was the head of the weekly meal program at the church, wanted to give people the opportunity to learn about nutrition and also get a free crock-pot if they did not already own one, through the funding of the church.
For 6 weeks, my partner, Alexa and I, held a nutritional education class. Each week we gave the participants a different recipe for their crock-pot that was healthy and lower in sodium. We took one or two ingredients from the recipes and gave them the health benefits of each ingredient! Each recipe was costed out to be under $1.60 per serving, for 4 servings per recipe!
(To the left is us, with a few of our participants!)
We had great feedback from our class, they loved the recipes and wanted us to continue the class for longer than 6 weeks, unfortunately at that time- we were unable to carry on with it. We really hope that someone will take the program as their senior capstone this next year.
The class was given handouts to take home each week for their benefit, along to share with their family and friends!
Some of the recipes we gave them:
- Crock-pot Chili
- Chicken Tacos
- Tuna and noodle casserole
- Chicken and broccoli casserole
*All recipes were recommended with low-sodium ingredients*
We had a great time with this class, we learned so much behind the reasoning of them attending the church meals, the class we put on and about our participants! We built great relationships and hope to do this more in the future! :)
